Report of the Household Income & Expenditure Survey 2010

Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) has been conducting the Household Income and Expenditure Survey (HIES) on a regular basis as the core survey to provide with very important data like income, expenditure, consumption and poverty situation. The first round of HIES was conducted in the Year 1973-74 in the independent Bangladesh. Since then, including the latest survey in2010, BBS has successfully completed 15 rounds of HIES. The HIES data series generated by the BBS is considered to be the main data source for estimation of poverty and its correlates in Bangladesh. The present report is based on the final data sets of HIES 2010. A two-stage sample design was adopted for the survey. HIES-2010, 612 PSUs were selected systematically from 16 strata as a subset of IMPS design. The sample size was 12,240 households where 7,840 were from rural area and 4,400 from urban area. A number of innovative techniques were adopted in the survey operation and also in methodology for conducting HIES 2010. Data collection and data entry were done in the field level and for this purpose each survey team was provided with a laptop computer. Data were sent to HQ office through internet. These new techniques helped improving the data collection and data entry processes to a great extent and also facilitated to compile the Final results quickly. Another important feature in HIES 2010 is the inclusion of r separate sub-modules in the questionnaire relating to Disability, Micro-credit, Migration & Remittance and Crisis and Crisis Management. For estimating incidences of poverty in 2010, the poverty lines of 2005 were inflated with constant prices using price indices.
