Sheikh A Baten

Sheikh A Baten was born in 1957 in the district of Comilla, Bangladesh. In 1971, when he was a student of class nine he joined country’s Liberation War-initially at the Saldanadi frontline under 4 Bengal Regiment and then as a guerilla group commander in his own area under Sector number two. Sheikh Baten received his Master in Social Sciences (MSS) degree in Sociology at the University of Dhaka. He had a bright academic career; he was also politically active. Baten was associated with Bishywo Shahittyo Kendro (World Literature Center) from its very early days. He joined the Bangladesh Civil Service in 1984 and served as a Magistrate in the different courts of the country. He is currently at the final stage of his PhD program in the Department of Sociology at the State University of New York (at Binghamton). Baten served as an editor of Bikshon (a journal of social sciences) and contributor to many journals. His recently published book Biswaonbirodhee Kabita (Poems against Globalization) superbly connects the local and personal suffering of life with global disorder. “...Sheikh A Baten completed this work in the Department of Sociology, State University of New York at Binghamton.
