400 Years of Capital Dhaka and Beyond,Volume 1,is a three-volume anthology on Dhaka,which is among the many publications being brought out by the ASB to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Capital Dhaka.It deals with the Politics,society and administration of capital Dhaka During the years 1608-2008.All these aspects of Dhaka have been narrated in eighteen articles written By distinguished scholars on the subject.The first article in the book,so to say as a curtain raiser,touches briefly upon the history of pre-Mughal Dhaka on the basis of epigraphic sources.This is followed by the others dealing with the detailed history of capital Dhaka during the last 400 years with special reference the politics,society, administration and urban life of the city.This particular volume reveals in great detail the rise, development and fall of the city during the various phases of its history during the last four hundred phases of this history during the last four hundred years, and how Dhaka became the capital of the newly independent sovereign state of Bangladesh.It is heartening to note that a large number of scholars are now-a-days taking interest in the history of the growth of Dhaka since it became the capital of independent Bangladesh.This volume contains some of the results of the works of those scholars.Thus the date of the foundation of Dhaka as a Mughal Capital an unsettled issue-has been discussed in detail. Scholars have dealt with the political history of Dhaka in great depth.So is also the administrative history of the-capital city even at the very local level. But more importantly light has been thrown upon social formation and social structure during the Mughal,Colonial and Pakistan periods of about 400 years in capital Dhaka.Aspects of urban life were also not forgotten.In short,the volume is a comprehensive account of politics- society and administration of the city.Undoubtedly research scholars and general readers would be benefited by the book.
