Communalism in Bangladesh and India was first published in 1994. The Babri Mosque in Ayoddhya of India was demolished in 1992 by the Hindu extremists. The present version has been updated by incorporating the subsequent carnage that took place at Gujarat, India and the communal disturbances that broke out in Bangladesh in 2001 and afterwards. As a backlash communal riot broke out in its ghastly form in different parts of Bangladesh. Although the Hindus in Bangladesh were victims of communal disturbances from time to time but the intensity and barbarity of communal riot that flared up in Bangladesh in December '92 surpassed savagery beyond imagination. Common people and civil society were shocked by this heinous act. But very few had the courage to protest these inhuman acts of the Muslim fundamentalists.

Sultana Nahar was overwhelmed with pain and sorrow at the inaction of the government and of the members of the civil society. She knew that she had no administrative power to contain communalism but that did not deter her from waging a war against this crime through her writing. Sultana Nahar is a religious minded person but she is against religious bigotry. She believes that a true follower of religion cannot harbour communal attitude. To bring cohesion in the society, she suggests following the true essence of religion. She decided to protest this barbarity with all her sincere feelings by writing a comparative narrative of communalism both in Bangladesh and India. Nahar took a number of field trips to India and different parts of Bangladesh to verify the real scenario of communalism.
