Cities in developing countries of Asia are faced with multifarious problems, some of which have reached crisis levels. Persistence of poverty, environmental degradation, inadequate provision of services, shortage of housing, traffic congestion and violence are among these critical problems. But at the root of all these problems is perhaps the problem of governance in cities. Rapid urban growth and impact of globalization also are challenges of governance. Urban Governance is no longer regarded a sole responsibility of the state or even the local government, rather urban governance should be the combined responsibility of the state (including the local government) and the civil society (including the private sector and NGOs).
