Gender sensitive policy formulation presupposes situation analysis based on comprehensive gender disaggregated data. Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics has been generating and publishing data, which are not in all cases sufficiently gender-disaggregated and do not meet the data requirements in all areas of gender equality concerns. Ministry of Women and Children Affairs in association with Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) and DFID undertook the policy research initiative "Introduction of Gender Perspective in Statistical Tools and Mechanisms" through its project Policy Leadership and Advocacy for Gender Equality (PLAGE). The main objective of the study was to review different censuses and surveys conducted by BBS and prepare a statistical profile of women in Bangladesh. The work on gender statistics covers areas such as (i) improvement of presentation and dissemination of existing gender statistics; (ii) improvement of measurement, concepts, definitions and classifications; and (iii) extension of data collection programs to provide needed statistics where data gap exists. The statistical profile in this volume may help explain the absolute and relative situation of women in Bangladesh society and identify trends in the selected indicators in order to monitor changes, positive or negative.
