Globalisation and the LDCs : Perspectives from the Asia-Pacific Region

This volume on Globalisation and LDCs: Perspectives from the Asia Pacific Region is a compendium of six articles which focus on a wide range of issues which have critical implications in terms of global integration of the economies of the LDCs. Each article presents a rich pool of information and valuable analyses about the impact of globalisation for the LDCs and initiatives required to address the emerging challenges. The volume begins with An Agenda for Structural Change in the LDCs. The high-level panel of experts was constituted with a view to providing an independent perspective to the Third LDC Conference held in Brussels in May 2001. The report also provided inputs to the Trade and Development Board of the UNCTAD. Second article on The LDCs in the WTO: Strengthening Participation Capacities deals with the state of multilateral efforts in assisting the LDCs by way of trade related technical assistance and market access facilities and addresses problems facing the LDCs in ensuring compliance with WTO rules. The article also deals with major regional cooperation measures to support the integration of the LDCs into the multilateral trading systems. The third article titled Financing Growth and Development in the Least Developed Countries of Asia and the Pacific: A Review focuses on the trends and distinguishing features of financing growth and development in the LDCs of Asia and the Pacific. The fourth article titled Global Intergration from Position of Strength: Enhancing the Capacity of Asia-Pacific LDCs reviews the recent performance of the Asia Pacific LDCs by concentrating on the major external sector correlates and examines the critical market access constraints both from the demand and the supply sides. The fifth article The WTO Process and Concerns of the LDCs: The Post-Seattle Scenario documents the WTO negotiation process and highlighted the concerns of the LDCs. The last article titled Third UN Conference of the LDCs: Making it Work for Bangladesh.
